The advantage of the professionally made wooden instruments is their excellent quality of sound. If you start with a plastic recorder, you will quickly want to progress to a wooden one as your skills improve and as you make more demands of your instrument, particularly in group playing.

For children, giving them a high quality wooden recorder says that you are serious about their new interest.  Beginners in particular need good instruments to ensure that playing is fun and that it is worthwhile practising. Quality has its price but even so, recorders are the least expensive instruments for beginners and are good value.
